Welcome to Week 4 of the Health Wise Home “6 Weeks to a Healthier You” Challenge! For those of you that are just now joining us, this challenge is FREE and open to anyone that follows this blog or the Health Wise Home Facebook page. This IS NOT a weight-loss, detox, or diet plan. The Health Wise Home “6 Weeks to a Healthier You” Challenge is a LIFESTYLE challenge; an opportunity to start making small, positive changes in your daily life that can lead to SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS in your overall health when consistently followed over time. We will not be counting calories, fat grams, or carbs. Instead, our focus is going to be on gradually ADDING healthy lifestyle habits into your daily life.
Week 1′s challenge was to DRINK MORE WATER throughout the day and to only consume “real” beverages, Week 2’s challenge was to EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AT EVERY MEAL, and last week’s challenge (Week 3) was to GET ENOUGH SLEEP (7 to 8 hours for adults). If you have been following along since Week 1, I hope that drinking more water throughout the day is becoming a normal part of your everyday life and that adding more fruits and vegetables into your daily diet is becoming a little bit easier, day by day. I continue to receive so much positive feedback from many of you that have been following along and participating over that past couple of weeks. Thank you so much for sharing your successes and positive experiences with me!
Week 4’s challenge is to AVOID FOOD PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN INGREDIENTS THAT YOU COULD NOT BUY YOURSELF IN THE GROCERY STORE. For example, you can’t buy “high-fructose corn syrup”, “Cellulose”, or “Ammonium sulfate” at the grocery store, can you? So why would you want to eat foods that contain these unnatural ingredients?
Wondering WHY so many of our food products contain these unnatural, chemically derived additives and ingredients? Well, it really comes down to profit. According to Michael Pollan, a best-selling author and food activist, food scientists work on creating these additives to “extend shelf life, to make old food look fresher and more appetizing than it really is, and get you to eat more”. Whether or not each individual additive poses a proven risk to your health is up for debate, however many of them are relatively new additions to our food sources and have not been consumed by humans for a long enough period of time to know what their long-term effects are. What we DO know, though, is that four of the top ten chronic diseases that kill most of us – Coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer – can be traced directly to the industrialization of our food. So, I choose to stay away!
This week’s challenge is also about AWARENESS. It is about taking the time to READ THE INGREDIENTS LIST of any pre-packaged or processed food that you buy on a regular basis and trying to avoid those that contain ingredients that you do not recognize. It is also about finding healthier substitutions for some of those items, and if you need help, ASK ME!
Just like previous weeks, I encourage you to include your entire family in on this week’s challenge, as it is beneficial to everyone’s health!
