HWH 6 Week ChallengeWelcome to Week 5 of the Health Wise Home “6 Weeks to a Healthier You” Challenge! For those of you that are just now joining us, this challenge is FREE and open to anyone that follows this blog or the Health Wise Home Facebook page. This IS NOT a weight-loss, detox, or diet plan. The Health Wise Home “6 Weeks to a Healthier You” Challenge is a LIFESTYLE challenge; an opportunity to start making small, positive changes in your daily life that can lead to SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS in your overall health when consistently followed over time. We will not be counting calories, fat grams, or carbs. Instead, our focus is going to be on gradually ADDING healthy lifestyle habits into your daily life.

Week 1′s challenge was to DRINK MORE WATER throughout the day and to only consume “real” beverages, Week 2′s challenge was to EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AT EVERY MEAL, Week 3’s challenge was to GET ENOUGH SLEEP (7 to 8 hours for adults), and Week 4’s challenge was AVOID FOOD PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN INGREDIENTS THAT YOU COULD NOT BUY YOURSELF IN THE GROCERY STORE. I have heard from so many of you that have been following along and enjoying the challenges. Thank you for sharing your successes with me and for participating. I hope that each of the lifestyle changes that I have shared are beginning to become a normal part of your every day life. And if not, just keep working towards one goal each week. YOU WILL GET THERE!

This week’s challenge (Week 5) is to INCORPORATE INTENTIONAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY INTO YOUR DAILY LIFE on a regular basis.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), regular  physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your  health. It can help:

  • Control your weight
  • Reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
  • Reduce your risk of some cancers
  • Strengthen your bones and muscles
  • Improve your mental health and mood
  • Improve your ability to do daily activities and prevent falls, if you are an older adult
  • Increase your chances of living longer

Now, does this mean that you need to start training for a 10k or sign up for spin class 5 days out of the week? How about hiring a personal trainer or committing to cranking out a P90x workout every day? Well, if those activities will help you reach one of your personal fitness goals, go for it. But, if you just want to improve your overall health and enjoy the benefits that regular physical activity has to offer, you can take a different route. The great thing about exercise is that there are countless ways for YOU to enjoy yourself while you are trying to INCORPORATE INTENTIONAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY INTO YOUR DAILY LIFE. There’s no one program that works for everyone. If you hate running, try taking a brisk walk. Or go for a hike. Or a swim. Or take a dance class. Just do something!

If you do not currently incorporate physical activity into your daily life, start off slow. Find ways to ADD MORE STEPS into your day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Pass all of those “good” parking spots and park your car towards the back of a parking lot. Commit to walking 10 minutes during your lunch break. Instead of meeting your girlfriends for coffee, meet up for a power walk. You get the idea. Whatever you do, be creative and try to enjoy yourself, too.

Like every other week, I encourage you to include your entire family in on this week’s challenge. EVERYONE can benefit from regular physical activity. Especially children!

Don’t forget to stop by the Health Wise Home Facebook page for daily tips, advice, and other helpful pieces of information to encourage and motivate you to meet your weekly challenge. I will also do a Facebook “check-in” each day to allow you to share any successes, struggles, questions, or advice with our Health Wise community. Good luck!
