Move Over Brown Bags, Bento Box Lunches Rock!

I thought that we were due for a FUN post. Getting healthy doesn’t have to be so serious all of the time, right! Have you ever seen anything as creative and cute as these Bento Box Lunches?!? I recently came across Bento Box Lunches for the first time over at Parent Map and literally spent an hour admiring every detail of these compact little lunches.

So what is a bento lunch? Historically, it is a Japanese boxed lunch that is compact, balanced, and visually appealing. Bento-style lunches are typically packed in reusable containers, are balanced nutritionally and visually, providing a variety of colors and textures to a lunch, and follow a general packing rule of thumb of 3 parts carbs, 1 part protein and 2 parts fruits and vegetables, without candy, junk food or oily foods.

Some benefits of packing a bento-style lunch include:

  • They are packed in reusable containers which reduces lunch waste such as plastic baggies and disposable containers
  • They provide a balanced variety of foods if you follow the general packing rules
  • Picky eaters may be tempted by their visually attractive presentation to try something new
  • They can save you money that you might have spent on pre-packaged meals (yuck!)

Now, I will be the first to admit that these are not going to be a daily occurrence in my kids’ lunch bags. Sorry kids! Will they have a healthy, wholesome lunch waiting for them? Absolutely! It won’t always look this pretty but I may feel extra creative one morning and decide to surprise them with a bento-inspired creation. Why not? Eating healthy can be fun, too, don’t you think!
